Overview

The term “gastrointestinal tract flora balance” or “gut microbiome balance” refers to the optimal composition and functional state of the trillions of microorganisms residing in the human digestive tract, primarily in the colon. This balanced state is marked by high species diversity, resilience to perturbations, and a symbiotic relationship with the host, leading to efficient nutrient metabolism, robust immune defense, synthesis of essential vitamins, and maintenance of mucosal barrier integrity. Loss of this balance (dysbiosis) is associated with a range of diseases, including infections, metabolic syndrome, autoimmune and neurodegenerative disorders.
