The gut microbiome community refers to the vast and complex ecosystem of trillions of microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses, that inhabit the human gastrointestinal tract [13, 17]. Often described as a 'metabolic organ,' this community is essential for host health, facilitating the digestion of complex dietary fibers, synthesizing vital vitamins such as K and B12, and producing short-chain fatty acids that support the intestinal barrier [16, 20]. It also plays a critical role in educating the host immune system and providing colonization resistance against opportunistic pathogens like Clostridioides difficile [13, 16]. Dysbiosis, or a pathological imbalance in this microbial community, has been linked to a wide array of conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, metabolic syndrome, and neurological disorders via the gut-brain axis [11, 17, 20]. As a therapeutic target, the gut microbiome is increasingly addressed through fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) and live biotherapeutic products (LBPs) such as Vowst and Rebyota, which aim to restore ecological diversity and suppress disease-driving pathogens [5, 11, 13]. Furthermore, the community significantly influences the pharmacokinetics and efficacy of various oral medications, including immunotherapies and metabolic drugs [18, 19].
