Target intelligence / Profile preview
Gastrointestinal microbiota composition refers to the diversity and relative abundance of the various microorganisms inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract, predominantly including bacteria, with additional roles for archaea, fungi, and viruses[1][2][3][4][5][6]. This composition is highly variable between individuals and across regions of the GI tract, with the colon housing the greatest microbial density. The primary bacterial phyla in a healthy adult gut are Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, followed by lower levels of Actinobacteria and Verrucomicrobia[1][2][4][5]. Microbiota composition is shaped by host genetics, age, diet, and environment[4][5][6]. A balanced composition contributes to digestion, nutrient absorption, vitamin synthesis, immune education, resistance to pathogens, and maintenance of gut barrier integrity[1][2][3][4][5][6]. Dysbiosis (imbalance or disruption in composition) is associated with a range of diseases, including metabolic syndrome, obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, infections, and some cancers[1][2][3][4][5]. Because this is not a gene, protein, or receptor but an ecological state, it is not considered a traditional molecular therapeutic target; rather, it is a functional characteristic or ecosystem property often manipulated by diet, antibiotics, probiotics, or fecal microbiota transplantation[1][2][3][4][5][6].
