Gut Microbiota and Bacterial Toxins

Molecular classification
Microbial Community, Bacterial Metabolites, Lipopolysaccharides, Peptidoglycan
01

Overview

The gut microbiota is a complex community of microorganisms residing in the digestive tract, primarily composed of bacteria. These bacteria play crucial roles in digestion, vitamin synthesis, immune modulation, and protection against pathogens. Some bacteria produce toxins, such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS), which can trigger inflammation. Dysbiosis, or disruption of the gut microbiota, can lead to various diseases including obesity, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, and increased cancer risk. Interventions like antibiotics, prebiotics, probiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) can impact the gut microbiota composition and function.

Mechanism of action

Variable, depends on specific bacteria, toxin, or treatment. Antibiotics kill bacteria, prebiotics promote growth of beneficial bacteria, probiotics introduce beneficial bacteria, FMT replaces the entire gut microbiota.
