Overview

The gut microbiota is a vast and diverse community of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, that inhabit the human gastrointestinal tract and play a fundamental role in maintaining host homeostasis through metabolic, structural, and protective functions (NIH, 2023). It is essential for the fermentation of non-digestible carbohydrates, the synthesis of vitamins such as B and K, and the maturation of the host's immune system (PubMed, 2021). Gastrointestinal pathogens, such as Clostridioides difficile or Salmonella, can invade or overgrow when this microbial balance is disrupted, leading to acute infection or chronic inflammatory states (Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology, 2022). Therapeutic targeting of this system involves the use of narrow-spectrum antibiotics to eliminate pathogens or the administration of probiotics and fecal microbiota transplants to restore a healthy microbial population (FDA, 2023). Because this target represents a complex biological ecosystem rather than a single molecule, drug development focuses on modulating the collective metabolic output and population dynamics of the flora to achieve clinical efficacy.
