Overview

The gut microbiota and immune milieu represent a complex symbiotic ecosystem comprising trillions of microorganisms and the host's mucosal immune system. This biological environment is central to human health, performing essential functions such as the fermentation of non-digestible carbohydrates into short-chain fatty acids, synthesis of essential vitamins, and the training of the host immune system to distinguish between commensals and pathogens [1][2]. Dysbiosis, or the pathological imbalance of this microbial community, is linked to a wide array of conditions, including Clostridioides difficile infections, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and metabolic disorders like obesity [3]. Therapeutic interventions target this milieu through narrow-spectrum antibiotics, fecal microbiota transplants (FMT), or live biotherapeutic products (LBPs) to restore ecological homeostasis [4]. By influencing the gut-immune axis, these treatments can reduce systemic inflammation and have been shown to enhance the efficacy of other therapies, such as cancer immunotherapies [5].
