Overview

The gut microbiota and intestinal mucosal ecosystem represent a complex symbiotic network comprising trillions of microorganisms and the host's intestinal lining (NIH, 2014). This ecosystem plays a critical role in human health by facilitating nutrient absorption, synthesizing essential vitamins, and training the host immune system to distinguish between commensal organisms and pathogens (Nature, 2020). Therapeutic interventions targeting this system include fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), probiotics, and engineered microbial consortia designed to restore homeostasis and enhance mucosal barrier function (FDA, 2023). Recent clinical successes, such as the approval of Vowst and Rebyota for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection, demonstrate the viability of the gut ecosystem as a therapeutic target (FDA, 2022). This target is unique in that it involves modulating an entire biological community rather than a single molecular entity.
