Gut microbiota bacterial membranes refer to the lipid bilayer structures that define and protect the bacterial cells within the gastrointestinal tract. These membranes are composed of diverse lipids (such as phospholipids, sphingolipids, glycine lipids), proteins, and, for Gram-negative bacteria, an outer membrane containing lipopolysaccharide. Membrane structures generate functional vesicles (OMVs) that are key mediators of bacterial communication, competition, and interaction with host tissues. They play central roles in modulating host immunity, maintaining microbial community structure, mediating drug resistance, and delivering virulence factors, but cannot be considered a single therapeutic target due to their compositional and functional heterogeneity across gut bacterial species.
