Overview

Gut microbiota fermentation substrates, commonly referred to as prebiotics or fermentable dietary fibers, are non-digestible food components that selectively stimulate the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria in the colon (Gibson et al., 2017, Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology). These substrates, primarily complex carbohydrates like inulin and various oligosaccharides, undergo anaerobic fermentation by the gut microbiome to produce bioactive metabolites, most notably short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate (Koh et al., 2016, Cell). SCFAs serve as a primary energy source for colonocytes and act as signaling molecules that regulate glucose homeostasis, lipid metabolism, and immune function through interaction with host receptors like GPR41 and GPR43 (Sonnenburg & Bäckhed, 2016, Nature). Dysregulation of fermentation processes or a lack of available substrates is linked to various metabolic and inflammatory conditions, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease (Holscher, 2017, Gut Microbes). Therapeutic interventions involve the administration of specific substrates to restore microbial balance, enhance intestinal barrier integrity, and promote the production of health-promoting metabolites.
