The gut mucosal surface and gut microbial community represent a complex, symbiotic ecosystem that is fundamental to human physiology and immune homeostasis (NIH, 2023). The mucosal surface serves as a multi-layered barrier consisting of epithelial cells, mucus, and immune cells, while the microbial community (microbiota) comprises trillions of microorganisms that assist in digestion, synthesize essential vitamins, and prevent pathogen colonization (Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2022). This system is not a single molecular target but rather a therapeutic environment where drugs like antibiotics, probiotics, and prebiotics act to modulate microbial composition and host-microbe interactions (Science, 2021). Dysregulation of this community, known as dysbiosis, is implicated in a wide range of pathologies, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), metabolic disorders like obesity, and colorectal cancer (Cell, 2020). Therapeutic interventions aim to restore the balance of this ecosystem to improve barrier function and reduce systemic inflammation (PubMed, 2023). Understanding the metabolic output of this community, such as short-chain fatty acids, is a key focus for developing novel precision therapies (World Journal of Gastroenterology, 2021).
