The gut mucosal surface represents the extensive interface between the host's internal environment and the external luminal contents of the gastrointestinal tract. It is composed of a specialized epithelial cell layer, a protective mucus coating, and various adhesion sites that facilitate the docking of both beneficial commensal bacteria and harmful pathogens (Vancamelbeke & Vermeire, 2017, Expert Review of Gastroenterology & Hepatology). These adhesion sites often involve interactions between microbial adhesins and host cell-surface glycoconjugates or proteins like integrins and cadherins (Ribet & Cossart, 2015, Molecular Microbiology). While not a single molecular target, this surface is a critical site for therapeutic intervention, particularly in the treatment of enteric infections and inflammatory bowel diseases (Turner, 2009, Nature Reviews Immunology). Drugs and probiotics targeting these sites aim to reinforce the intestinal barrier, prevent pathogen colonization through competitive exclusion, or provide a physical protective coating to ulcerated tissues (Piqué et al., 2019, Microorganisms). Consequently, it is viewed more as a physiological compartment or a collection of diverse molecular targets rather than a single discrete receptor or enzyme.
