Gutta-percha is a natural thermoplastic polymer, specifically trans-1,4-polyisoprene, derived from trees such as Palaquium gutta (Wikipedia). In endodontics, it serves as the primary material for obturating root canals to prevent bacterial reinfection following the treatment of pulpitis or apical periodontitis (StatPearls). The material is favored for its biocompatibility, radiopacity, and ability to be softened by heat or dissolved by solvents like chloroform for retreatment (PubMed). Although it is biologically inert, it is often combined with zinc oxide, metal sulfates, and resins to enhance its physical properties (PubChem). It is not a therapeutic target in the traditional pharmacological sense but rather a medical device component used to provide a fluid-tight seal within the tooth (NIH).
