H19 imprinted maternally expressed transcript (H19) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), highly expressed from the maternal allele in embryonic tissues and involved in regulation of embryonic growth, gene expression, and tumor suppression[1][2][3]. It does not code for protein, but instead acts through molecular mechanisms including chromatin modification and interaction with chromatin-binding proteins such as MBD1, influencing histone methylation and expression of a network of imprinted genes, notably IGF2[2]. The H19 transcript also hosts miR-675, which regulates target genes post-transcriptionally[1][2]. H19 is strongly expressed during embryogenesis, with restricted expression in most adult tissues except skeletal muscle and heart; dysregulated H19 expression is associated with various cancers and growth syndromes[2][3]. It is not a traditional pharmacological target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, but its expression is investigated as a biomarker in cancer and in the study of imprinting disorders[1][2][3].
