H2B histone pseudogene 8 (H2BP8) is a non-functional genomic DNA element classified as a pseudogene from the histone H2B family. Unlike true histone H2B genes, H2BP8 contains sequence alterations in both the protein-coding region and regulatory elements that prevent the production of a functional protein. These changes include a frameshift mutation, a missense mutation introducing a non-histone amino acid residue, the absence of a stop codon, and the lack of necessary promoter sequences for gene transcription. As a result, H2BP8 cannot encode a proper histone protein and does not contribute to nucleosome assembly, chromatin structure, or DNA-related cellular processes. It has no known physiological function, disease association, or role as a drug target[7].
