Overview

H2B.W histone 4, pseudogene (H2BW4P) is a noncoding sequence derived from the H2B.W family of histone variants, which are typically specialized histones found in germline cells but do not encode functional protein themselves[2][3]. In humans, several H2B.W variants and their pseudogenes exist, located on the X chromosome and elsewhere[2]. H2B.W gene products are known for their sequence divergence from canonical histone H2B and are expressed in sperm and other germline tissues, yet *pseudogenes* like H2BW4P do not produce a functional histone and have no known biological or disease role[2][3]. The functional H2B.W histones themselves are poorly characterized but are thought to participate in specialized chromatin packaging in germline cells and may contribute to genome structure during spermatogenesis and possibly telomere regulation[4]. However, H2BW4P, as a pseudogene, lacks coding potential, is not expressed at the protein level, and is not relevant as a drug target or biomarker[3][2].
