Target intelligence / Profile preview

Haemophilus influenzae Capsular Polysaccharide (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
Polysaccharide, Capsular Polysaccharide
01

Overview

The capsular polysaccharide of Haemophilus influenzae, particularly type b (Hib), is a high-molecular-weight polymer that forms the outermost structure of encapsulated H. influenzae bacteria. This capsule is a critical virulence factor, enabling the bacterium to evade host immune responses and cause invasive diseases such as meningitis and pneumonia, especially in children. It is composed of repeating units of polyribosyl-ribitol-phosphate (PRP). Antibodies against it confer protection against Hib disease, making it a target for vaccination strategies.
