Protein D is a highly conserved, 42 kDa surface-exposed lipoprotein found in all strains of Haemophilus influenzae. It exhibits glycerophosphodiesterase activity and binds immunoglobulin D, playing roles in virulence and immune modulation. It is a target for direct vaccines against nontypeable H. influenzae infections and also serves as a carrier protein for conjugate vaccines like Synflorix™.
Hydrolyzes glycerophosphodiesters, modulating host-pathogen interactions and impairing ciliary function. Acts as a carrier protein to enhance the immunogenicity of conjugated antigens.
