The polyribosylribitol phosphate (PRP) capsule is a polysaccharide structure that forms the outermost layer of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). This capsule is the primary virulence factor of Hib, enabling it to evade host immune responses and cause invasive diseases. It is a linear polymer composed of repeating units of ribose and ribitol-5-phosphate. Antibody responses directed against PRP are critical for effective opsonization and clearance. Hib vaccines use purified or conjugated forms of the PRP polysaccharide to stimulate an immune response.
