Overview

The Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) polysaccharide antigen (PRP) is the main virulence factor of Hib bacteria. It is a polyribosylribitol phosphate capsule that enables the bacterium to evade host immune defenses, particularly phagocytosis and complement-mediated killing. PRP is the target of Hib conjugate vaccines, which elicit protective antibody responses in infants and young children.
