Haemophilus influenzae type b polysaccharide conjugate protein carrier complex (Hib conjugate vaccine)

Target
Hib conjugate vaccine
Molecular classification
Vaccine, Conjugate Vaccine, Polysaccharide-Protein Conjugate
01

Overview

The Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) polysaccharide conjugate protein carrier complex is the active component in Hib vaccines. It consists of the PRP capsule of H. influenzae type b conjugated to a carrier protein (Tetanus toxoid, Diphtheria toxoid, CRM197, or Neisseria meningitidis OMP). Conjugation converts the T-cell independent PRP antigen into a T-cell dependent antigen, eliciting robust antibody production even in infants. Widespread use has dramatically reduced rates of severe Hib disease.
