Haemophilus influenzae type b Polysaccharide Conjugated to Neisseria meningitidis Outer Membrane Protein Complex

Molecular classification
Polysaccharide-Protein Conjugate, Vaccine Component
01

Overview

This conjugate molecule is used in certain vaccines, where the capsular polysaccharide from *Haemophilus influenzae* type b (Hib) is chemically linked (conjugated) to the outer membrane protein complex (OMPC) derived from *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroup B. This combination is designed to enhance immunogenicity, especially in young children who do not respond well to plain polysaccharide antigens. The Hib component is its capsular polysaccharide, specifically polyribosylribitol phosphate (PRP). The OMPC consists of proteins and lipids extracted from the outer membrane of *N. meningitidis* serogroup B and acts as a carrier protein for T-cell help and provides adjuvant properties that boost immune responses beyond classic carrier activity. The conjugate induces strong IgG antibody responses against Hib even in infants as young as 2 months old. This conjugate forms the basis of certain licensed Hib vaccines such as PedvaxHIB® or Comvax®, which are particularly effective among populations at high risk for invasive Hib disease.
