The Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) PRP capsule conjugated to tetanus protein carrier is a conjugate vaccine used to prevent invasive diseases caused by Hib. The PRP polysaccharide from the Hib capsule is covalently linked to tetanus toxoid, transforming it into a T-cell dependent antigen, which elicits a stronger and longer-lasting immune response, even in infants. This vaccine has dramatically reduced the incidence of Hib-related diseases, such as meningitis, in vaccinated populations.
The conjugate vaccine elicits a T-cell dependent immune response against the Hib capsular polysaccharide, leading to the production of anti-PRP antibodies that neutralize the bacteria.
