Functionalized hafnium oxide nanoparticles are engineered nanomaterials designed to physically amplify the effects of ionizing radiation specifically within tumor cells. They act as radioenhancers, increasing the local deposition of energy inside cancer cells upon irradiation, leading to enhanced DNA damage and cell death compared to radiotherapy alone. This physical amplification occurs directly inside tumor cells that have internalized the nanoparticles.
