Overview

The hair follicle is a tunnel-like structure that resides in the skin’s dermal layer. It consists of an inner and outer root sheath, a connective tissue bulb enclosing the dermal papilla (which delivers nutrients and hormonal signals), and a bulge region housing multipotent stem cells. These cells respond to complex signaling pathways—including WNT/β-catenin, SHH (sonic hedgehog), BMP (bone morphogenetic protein), Notch, and others—to orchestrate the cyclic regeneration of hair. The follicle is the main site of hair growth, the target of androgenetic alopecia, and a key region for wound healing. It is innervated and associated with sebaceous glands and arrector pili muscles, forming a sensory and protective unit within the skin. It is primarily described anatomically and functionally, not as a single therapeutic or molecular target[1][5][6][7][8].
