Overview

Hair follicle cells refer collectively to the diverse populations of epithelial and mesenchymal-derived cells that make up the structure known as the hair follicle. The main types include matrix keratinocytes responsible for producing new hair shafts, dermal papilla fibroblasts which regulate growth signals and provide nutrition, outer/inner root sheath keratinocytes providing structural support, bulge region stem/progenitor cells essential for regeneration after injury or during cycling phases, and melanocytes which impart pigment. These various specialized populations coordinate through complex signaling networks to drive cyclical processes of growth (anagen), regression (catagen), rest (telogen), and shedding. While individual molecules within these cellular compartments can be therapeutic targets—for example, androgen receptor in certain forms of baldness—the term “hair follicle cell” is too broad to represent a canonical drug target itself. Instead it describes an anatomical/functional unit composed of multiple interacting cellular subtypes with distinct roles in skin biology.[1][2][3][4]
