Overview

Hair follicle epithelial stem cells are a population of slow-cycling, multipotent cells located in the bulge region of the hair follicle's outer root sheath[1][4][5]. They are responsible for the cyclical regeneration of the hair follicle, contribute to skin homeostasis, and play essential roles in tissue regeneration and wound healing[3][8]. HFSCs are regulated by a specialized niche and complex signaling pathways, such as Wnt/β-catenin, BMP, Notch, and Hedgehog[3][5][9]. Commonly identified by markers such as Sox9, Lrig1, Tcf3, and NFATc1, they give rise to the various epithelial cell types of the hair follicle during the hair cycle and can interact with the nervous and vascular systems[2][5][7].
