Overview

Hair follicle regenerative structures refer to the specialized anatomical and cellular components within the hair follicle (HF) that enable its cyclical self-renewal, repair, and regeneration. These structures are composed of distinct stem cell populations and their niches, as well as key mesenchymal-epithelial interactions that drive hair growth cycles and tissue homeostasis. Key components include epithelial stem cells in the bulge, melanocyte stem cells, dermal papilla cells (DPCs), and dermal sheath cup cells. The ability for cyclic regeneration is driven by activation/quiescence cycles in bulge EpSCs, reciprocal signaling between DPCs/DSCs and matrix keratinocytes, melanocyte progenitor migration/differentiation during anagen, and dynamic interchange between DS-derived stem cells and DP population. Growth factors involved include Wnt, BMP2, bFGF, PDGF. Hypoxic conditions enhance proliferation/trichogenicity in culture models.
