Overview

Hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs) are multipotent adult stem cells located primarily in the bulge region of the hair follicle. They are essential for hair regeneration and maintain tissue homeostasis, driving cyclic bouts of hair growth. HFSCs are self-renewing and differentiate into various cell types within the follicle and interfollicular epidermis during wound healing. Regulation involves Wnt/β-catenin, TGFβ/BMP, Notch, and Hedgehog signaling pathways. Dysfunction leads to impaired hair regeneration, making them attractive targets for treating alopecia or enhancing skin repair.
