Overview

HES1 is a transcriptional repressor belonging to the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) family. It plays a critical role in regulating cell proliferation and differentiation during embryogenesis, particularly through Notch signaling pathways. HES1 maintains stem/progenitor cells by repressing activators required for differentiation, influencing the timing and outcome of cell fate decisions. It also participates in the unfolded protein response (UPR) during endoplasmic reticulum stress by repressing GADD34 expression, contributing to cellular survival.
