Overview

Hairy and enhancer of split-related protein HELT (HELT) is a basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor belonging to the HES/HEY-like family, acting as a transcriptional repressor during embryonic neural development[6][11]. HELT preferentially binds to specific DNA sequences, represses neurogenin (Ngn) genes, and determines whether neural progenitors differentiate into GABAergic rather than glutamatergic neurons[9]. HELT shares domain and functional similarities with other HES/HEY transcriptional repressors, exhibiting key roles in cell fate specification and transcriptional regulation during organismal development[6][9]. There are no known drugs, direct therapeutic links, or safety concerns associated with HELT, and it is not used as a clinical biomarker[6][9][11].
