Hantavirus envelope glycoprotein Gc is a critical structural component of the hantavirus virion, forming heterodimeric spikes with the Gn glycoprotein on the viral surface [1, 3]. It is classified as a class II viral fusion protein, responsible for mediating the fusion of the viral envelope with the host endosomal membrane in a low-pH environment during cell entry [5, 6]. Gc is a primary target for the host's neutralizing antibody response, making it a focal point for the development of vaccines and therapeutic monoclonal antibodies [11, 13]. Mutations in Gc can lead to viral escape from neutralization, and its complex conformational changes during fusion present both a challenge and an opportunity for drug design [5, 15]. The protein also plays a role in virus assembly and budding by interacting with the Gn protein and the viral nucleocapsid [1, 14].
