Overview

HAUS augmin-like complex subunit 5 (HAUS5) is a core component of the augmin (HAUS) complex, an eight-subunit protein assembly that binds to and nucleates microtubules, facilitating robust mitotic spindle assembly and maintaining centrosome integrity during mitosis. HAUS5 plays a vital role in cell division by enabling microtubule formation along the mitotic spindle, ensuring proper chromosome segregation and cytokinesis. Loss or depletion of HAUS5 results in severe mitotic defects, such as centrosome fragmentation and mitotic arrest, compromising cell viability. HAUS5 is expressed at variable levels across tissues but is frequently upregulated in many cancers, correlating with tumor progression and poor prognosis. While it is a potential prognostic biomarker and emerging therapeutic target in oncology, there are currently no established drugs selectively targeting HAUS5.
