Overview

Hazel pollen contains several allergenic proteins, most notably Cor a 1, Cor a 6, and Cor a 10. These proteins are responsible for allergic reactions in sensitive individuals and show significant cross-reactivity with other plant allergens, particularly those from the Betulaceae family (e.g., birch). Cor a 1 is a major allergen and a member of the PR-10 protein family. Cor a 6 is an isoflavone reductase-like protein, and Cor a 10 is an endoplasmic reticulum luminal binding protein of the Hsp70 chaperone family. Exposure to these proteins can cause seasonal allergic rhinitis or asthma symptoms, and some individuals may experience oral allergy syndrome due to cross-reactivity.
