Target intelligence / Profile preview
Heart tranquilization, also known in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as 'An Shen' or 'nourishing the heart and tranquilizing the mind,' is a therapeutic category and pharmacological action rather than a specific molecular target like a protein or receptor. It describes a functional state of calming the spirit (Shen) and stabilizing emotional and physiological rhythms, particularly in response to conditions such as insomnia, palpitations, and anxiety. While not a single molecule, its effects are mediated through complex biological pathways including the modulation of the serotonergic (5-HT) and GABAergic systems, as well as the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Modern pharmacological research identifies that 'heart-tranquilizing' agents often target the serotonin transporter (SERT), 5-HT receptors, and neurotrophic signaling to exert their effects. This concept is central to the use of various herbal formulas intended to restore internal balance and protect against neurodegenerative and psychiatric decline.
Heart tranquilization involves the stabilization of the central nervous system by modulating neurotransmitter synthesis and transport, particularly increasing 5-HT expression and regulating GABAergic tone. These actions help to suppress HPA axis hyperactivity and reduce oxidative stress-induced neurotoxicity, thereby restoring psychological and physiological homeostasis.
