Heat shock 60kDa protein 1 pseudogenes are non-functional genomic sequences similar in structure and sequence to the functional HSPD1 gene, which encodes the mitochondrial chaperonin Hsp60. Hsp60 proper participates in protein folding, complex assembly, and stress response in mitochondria, but the pseudogene form does not produce functional protein and does not have a known biological or pathological role. Pseudogenes may arise from duplication or retrotransposition events, but they are generally silent and not considered molecular drug targets or biomarkers. There is no therapeutic, diagnostic, or mechanistic significance assigned to these pseudogenes in current biomedical practice.
