Overview

Heat shock factor protein 1 (HSF1) is a highly conserved transcription factor that serves as the master regulator of the heat shock response (HSR) in eukaryotic cells. It plays a central role in cellular protection against proteotoxic stress, such as elevated temperatures, oxidative stress, heavy metals, toxins, and other environmental insults. HSF1 induces expression of heat shock proteins that function as molecular chaperones for refolding or degrading damaged intracellular proteins during cellular stress responses, maintaining protein homeostasis under adverse conditions. Beyond the heat shock response, HSF1 regulates genes involved in the endoplasmic reticulum unfolded protein response, ubiquitin-proteasome system, multidrug resistance, autophagy, apoptosis, immune response modulation, cell growth arrest/differentiation during developmental diapause, chromatin remodeling, cancer development/progression, and aging processes.
