Heat shock protein 20 (Hsp20) is a member of the heat shock protein family, acting as an ATP-independent molecular chaperone. It prevents irreversible aggregation of denatured proteins during cellular stress and plays key roles in proteostasis. In cardiac tissue, it protects against apoptosis, remodeling, and ischemia/reperfusion injury and modulates cardiac contractility. Its expression is induced by heat shock factors during cellular stress. Hsp20 is being explored as a potential therapeutic target for heart disease.
