Overview

Heat toxin (Re-Du) is a fundamental pathological concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that describes a state of severe inflammation and toxicity (Li et al., 2017). It is not a single molecular target but rather a clinical syndrome characterized by fever, redness, and suppuration, often associated with infectious diseases (Zhang et al., 2021). Modern research suggests that Heat toxin correlates with the presence of bacterial endotoxins, such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS), and the excessive release of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-alpha and IL-6 (Wang et al., 2018). TCM therapies aimed at clearing heat and detoxifying utilize herbal compounds like andrographolide and baicalin to modulate these inflammatory pathways (Chen et al., 2020). Consequently, while Heat toxin serves as a therapeutic focus in TCM, it represents a complex interplay of multiple biological markers rather than a discrete protein or receptor (World Health Organization, 2019).
