Overview

This process involves specialized bacterial surface proteins, such as the Blood group antigen-binding adhesin (BabA) and Sialic acid-binding adhesin (SabA), which recognize and bind to specific glycolipids and glycoproteins on host cells, including Lewis b and sialyl-Lewis X antigens (PubMed: 12183613, UniProt: P0EDC4). These interactions are essential for the bacteria to resist the mechanical clearing forces of the stomach and to position themselves for the injection of virulence factors like CagA into host cells (PubMed: 15507011). Disrupting these adhesin-lipid interactions represents a promising therapeutic strategy known as anti-adhesion therapy, which aims to prevent infection or reduce bacterial density (PubMed: 22435081). Current research explores the use of carbohydrate mimetics, bismuth compounds, and specific fatty acids like linolenic acid to block these binding sites, offering a potential alternative or adjunct to traditional antibiotic regimens that face increasing resistance (PubMed: 12488542).
