Helicobacter pylori deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is the genomic blueprint of the Gram-negative bacterium responsible for the majority of peptic ulcers and gastric cancers worldwide (WHO, 2021). This target is central to the organism's ability to persist in the acidic gastric environment, encoding essential survival enzymes like urease and virulence factors such as CagA and VacA that modulate host immune responses (PubMed, PMID: 30254054). In clinical practice, H. pylori DNA is the direct target of nitroimidazole antibiotics, such as metronidazole, which are reduced within the bacterium to form reactive radicals that cause lethal DNA strand breaks (StatPearls, 2023). Additionally, fluoroquinolones like levofloxacin target the DNA-protein complexes of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, effectively halting DNA replication and transcription (PubMed, PMID: 25103491). The emergence of multidrug-resistant H. pylori strains has made the study of DNA-level mutations critical for tailoring effective 'rescue' therapies (NCBI, 2022). Consequently, H. pylori DNA serves both as a primary pharmacological target and a diagnostic substrate for precision medicine in gastroenterology.
