Helicobacter pylori enzymes and membrane components represent a broad category of molecular targets essential for the survival and pathogenesis of the H. pylori bacterium within the human gastric environment. A primary enzyme target is urease, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of urea to ammonia, thereby neutralizing gastric acid and allowing the bacteria to colonize the stomach (StatPearls, 2023). Membrane components include various outer membrane proteins (OMPs) such as BabA and SabA that facilitate bacterial adhesion to the gastric epithelium, as well as lipopolysaccharides that contribute to immune evasion (PubMed, PMID: 30254101). Current therapeutic strategies target these components using a combination of antibiotics; for instance, beta-lactams like amoxicillin inhibit cell wall synthesis enzymes, while macrolides like clarithromycin target the bacterial ribosome to halt protein production (NIH, 2022). Eradication of H. pylori through these targets is the standard of care for treating peptic ulcers and chronic gastritis, and it serves as a critical preventive measure against gastric adenocarcinoma and MALT lymphoma. However, the clinical utility of targeting these components is increasingly threatened by the global emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains (World Health Organization, 2017).
