Overview

Helicobacter pylori membrane and other bacterial proteins represent a collective group of molecular targets within the H. pylori bacterium that are critical for its survival and pathogenicity in the human stomach. This group includes essential enzymes like urease, which neutralizes gastric acid to facilitate colonization, and various outer membrane proteins (OMPs) such as BabA and SabA that mediate adhesion to the gastric epithelium. Additionally, it encompasses key virulence factors like the vacuolating cytotoxin (VacA) and the cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA) protein, which modulate host immune responses and promote chronic inflammation. Therapeutic agents, most notably bismuth salts like bismuth subsalicylate, exert their antimicrobial effects by binding to these membrane components and inhibiting enzymatic activity, thereby disrupting the bacterial cell wall and preventing colonization. This multi-target approach is a cornerstone of H. pylori eradication therapies, particularly in the context of increasing antibiotic resistance.
