Helicobacter pylori surface structures encompass a diverse array of molecular components located on the outer membrane and surface of the bacterium, including adhesins, flagella, lipopolysaccharides (LPS), and outer membrane proteins (OMPs). These structures are critical for the pathogen's ability to survive the acidic environment of the stomach, colonize the gastric mucosa, and evade the host immune system. For instance, adhesins like BabA and SabA mediate binding to host glycoconjugates, while flagella provide the motility necessary to penetrate the mucus layer. These surface components are primary targets for the host's immune response and are being extensively studied as candidates for vaccine development. Pharmacologically, bismuth-based compounds are known to interact with these surface structures, leading to bacterial cell wall degradation and inhibition of enzyme activities. Additionally, novel therapeutic strategies aim to use anti-adhesive molecules to prevent bacterial attachment, thereby facilitating clearance and reducing the risk of chronic infection and associated diseases such as peptic ulcers and gastric adenocarcinoma.
