Molecular classification
Sesquiterpenoid, Fungal metabolite, Phytotoxin
01

Overview

Helminthosporol is a sesquiterpene dialdehyde metabolite produced by the fungal plant pathogen Helminthosporium sativum, currently known as Bipolaris sorokiniana (Kato et al., 1963). It is primarily characterized as a phytotoxin that demonstrates dual plant growth-regulating properties, notably mimicking the effects of gibberellins in promoting the growth of rice seedlings (Tamura et al., 1965). Conversely, it exhibits inhibitory activity in other botanical contexts, such as the suppression of gibberellic acid-induced alpha-amylase synthesis in barley endosperm (Mori et al., 1965). Because Helminthosporol is a small molecule fungal product rather than a protein-based signaling component or receptor, it is not considered a therapeutic target in human medicine. There are currently no pharmaceutical drugs developed to target this molecule, and it lacks any known association with human disease pathways (PubChem CID 119044). Its primary relevance remains limited to agricultural biotechnology and the investigation of fungal-host interactions.
