Overview

The Hemagglutinin antigen of Influenza A virus H1N1 subtype is a homotrimeric glycoprotein on the viral surface, composed of subunits HA1 and HA2 derived from cleavage of the precursor HA0. Its globular head domain binds sialic acid receptors on host cells, initiating infection, while the stem domain mediates fusion of viral and host membranes in acidic endosomes[1][3][5][2]. Hemagglutinin is the principal antigen for influenza immunity: neutralizing antibodies (often elicited by vaccination) bind to regions on HA, blocking viral attachment or fusion.
