Hemagglutinin Antigen of Influenza B Virus (Yamagata Lineage)

Molecular classification
Surface glycoprotein, Viral protein, Hemagglutinin
01

Overview

The hemagglutinin (HA) antigen of the influenza B virus Yamagata lineage is a surface glycoprotein essential for viral entry into host cells. It mediates binding to sialic acid receptors and facilitates membrane fusion. As a major antigenic determinant, it is a primary target for neutralizing antibodies and a key component of influenza vaccines. Antigenic differences between the Yamagata and Victoria lineages necessitate lineage-specific vaccine components. The Yamagata lineage has not been detected in circulation since March 2020 and its status is currently under review.
