Hemagglutinin Antigen of Influenza B Yamagata Lineage (HA (Yamagata))

Target
HA (Yamagata)
Molecular classification
Glycoprotein, Viral protein, Surface antigen
01

Overview

The hemagglutinin (HA) antigen is a major surface glycoprotein of the Influenza B virus, specifically from the Yamagata lineage. HA mediates binding to sialic acid-containing receptors on host cells, facilitating viral attachment and subsequent membrane fusion required for infection. It is a primary target for neutralizing antibodies and a key component of influenza vaccines. While historically a significant circulating lineage, naturally occurring cases of B/Yamagata have not been confirmed since March 2020, raising questions about its possible extinction.

Mechanism of action

Vaccines induce neutralizing antibodies that block HA-mediated viral entry. Therapeutic antibodies bind to HA and prevent viral attachment and fusion.
