Hemagglutinin of Group 1 Influenza A Virus (HA)

Target
HA
Molecular classification
Glycoprotein, Viral protein, Class I fusion protein
01

Overview

Hemagglutinin (HA) is a homotrimeric glycoprotein on the surface of influenza A viruses. It mediates attachment to host cells via sialic acid binding and facilitates membrane fusion for viral entry. Group 1 hemagglutinins include subtypes H1, H2, H5, H6, H8, H9, H11, H12, H13, H16, H17, and H18. HA is a major target for neutralizing antibodies and a key component of universal vaccine design efforts.

Mechanism of action

Neutralizing antibodies block receptor binding or interfere with membrane fusion. Universal vaccine candidates elicit broadly neutralizing antibodies against conserved regions of the hemagglutinin stalk.
