Hemagglutinin of influenza A virus H9 subtype (HA) is a homotrimeric glycoprotein on the viral envelope, consisting of HA1 (head with receptor binding domain) and HA2 (stalk with fusion peptide) subunits. It mediates viral attachment to sialic acid receptors on host cells (e.g., α2,6-linked in mammals) and low-pH-induced fusion of viral and endosomal membranes for entry. H9 HA shows structural differences from H3/H5 subtypes, lacking a lateral loop equivalent to antigenic site A, with unique antigenic sites influencing antibody escape, virulence, and receptor affinity. It is a key target for antivirals and vaccines due to its role in infection.
