Hemagglutinin (HA) is a major surface glycoprotein of the influenza A virus, including the H3N2 subtype. It mediates attachment to host cell receptors and facilitates membrane fusion, essential for viral entry and infectivity. HA is a homotrimer comprised of HA1 and HA2 subunits. Due to its immunodominance and variability, hemagglutinin sequence changes drive annual updates to influenza vaccines. The H3N2 subtype emerged during the Hong Kong flu pandemic (1968–1969) from reassortment events.
Viral attachment to sialic acid receptors on host cells, followed by conformational change and membrane fusion upon endocytosis and exposure to acidic pH.
